Children's Book Art

A number of my illustrations have been featured in various children's print products and publications over the years. The animal pieces are all creatures I discovered in the various forests/parks growing up in British Columbia, Canada.

Pen & Ink with Watercolours
The art method I employed with these art pieces was to paint the colour portion of the art piece first and then apply the black ink over of the coloured layers. I do this to mimic 19th Century colour etchings, which had the black ink layer printed as the last layer on colour prints.  This comes from my love of old world ink prints, such as medieval woodcuts, and modern linocut artwork, all of which I was taught in art school where I specialized in printmaking. The benefit of this method is that the black ink remains pure and dark. If the paint were applied over the black layer, it may cover or diminish the black ink. It is an art style I developed that was inspired upon me while I took printmaking while attending a full time, 2-year Fine Arts Program.

Turtle  (6.5Wx6.5H).  A local park I used to visit had a large population of turtles around the park's lake. Many of these could be seen sunbathing themselves on floating logs and rocks. They were of a species I hadn't seen before although I was informed that these were the native species.

Bumblebee  (6.5Wx6.5H).  I have always been fascinated with Bumblebees. When I worked in the woods for a summer job one year, where we encountered a number of Bumblebees that were half the size of golf balls. I sold a number of prints of this piece to people who decorating their children's bedrooms. I chose a 19th Century etching plate style for this piece.

The Deadline  (5.0Wx9.0H).  This was part of a 3 piece commission, all of which were a lot of fun to create.  I was given a free hand with these pieces  just as long as they related to time management.  The pieces were used in a company self-promotional brochure.

Deer Mouse  (6.5Wx8.5H).  I once lived in a house that suddenly and quite unexpectedly became over run with Deer Mice. I had live traps and managed to relocate them to a nearby field. These creatures are amazingly intelligent and extremely cute.

Dear Santa  (5.0Wx7.0H). A Christmas Card illustration in Pen&Ink.  A good example of how using an old world style of illustration works well in our present times.

Carp Fish  (6.5Wx85H).  A pen & ink illustration created for an art director who wanted to see if I could render fish in an old etching style. This piece is a watercolour painting with pen&ink added after it was painted to mimic how 19th Century etchings were printed.
