Kanaka Creek is a creek that flows through Maple Ridge. It is a short drive from where I live. The creek is named after the Kanaka people of Hawaii who had been hired by CP Railway to work on the railway in British Columbia. A friendship grew between them and the local indigenous people, which resulted in the creek being named after them.
Kanaka Creek flows down from Blue Mountain, crossing Dewdney Trunk at 172nd street, working its way down to the Fraser River. My painting shows the creek next to where the Bell Irving fish hatchery is located.
My Kanaka Creek No3 painting won Third Place in People's Choice Award at the Garibaldi Art Club Fall Art Show in November 2023.
