Ink PRINTsA lot can be expressed with simple black-line artwork just as it was back in the 12th to 16th Centuries. Traditionally, all European woodcut art was printed using just black ink. If color woodcuts appear in medieval books, they were hand-colored after they were printed and this was often done by the purchaser of the book themselves. Some books were sold containing hand-colored woodcut images but these were uncommon, at least prior to the 16th Century, and were far more expensive than books that contained single color woodcut prints. Having specialized in printmaking in art school, I got in a lot of practice in the various printing methods.

The Roc. Popularized in Arabian fairy tales and sailors' folklore, the Roc was a mythical giant eagle. This illustration ended up in a medieval bestiary book. It is one of my favourite illustrations and only one of several woodcut illustrations in the bestiary book I rendered.

Medieval Battle: Evil vs Good. Over the years, I have been asked to rendered a number of medieval style woodcut images for various book series. This piece was just one of these images and took a bit of time to complete, and despite it's subject matter, I like how it turned out.

Summoning Cthulhu. This was part of a commission for a game book for the Cthulhu Role Playing Game game, rendered in medieval style woodcut artwork. There were 10 pieces in this commission.
Cave Trolls. This piece was part of a four piece woodcut style illustrations I was commissioned to create for a client. The artwork was destined to appear in a book of medieval tales.
The Letter "I". This piece was one of several artistic, medieval style letters I was asked to create for a book. Each piece was to be a unique letter that acted as the first letter of each paragraph (a drop-cap) of each new chapter in the book.
Making Magic Tiles. This was part of a 4-piece commission. I was asked to create an illustration of a magic user (magician) in the process of enchanting magical tiles in an archaic woodcut style. I was asked to make it appear menencing and slightly on the dark side.

Medieval Battle: Good vs Evil. I was asked to rendered a number of medieval of woodcut images for a series of books. This piece was just one of this set of images and took a bit of time to complete. Despite the subject matter, I like how this one turned out.
Minotaur. This was one of several woodcuts I was commissioned to create depicting mythical beasts. In many ways, the woodcut style artwork seems to be the best way to depict the mythical creatures and monsters from folklore and classic ancient literature.
Rich Merchants. One of several woodcuts I was asked to create for a medieval themed book. This piece, due to all the people depicted in the artwork being mounted on horseback, this one took a bit more time to design and complete. I needed to remain faithful to the time period being depicted, the publisher's art guidelines, and also had to have a good design.
