Artifact Illustration: Ivory Chess Piece. I worked as an archaeology field artist for a number of years, and have had a lot of experience rendering illustrations of historical and prehistoric artifacts from various archaeology sites. This is an example of how I took my archaeology experience to render a commissioned illustration for a book publisher. In this case, the publisher wanted several small illustrations depicting various medieval artifacts to fit related spots throughout their book to support the text narrative and provide atmosphere. I have always tried to convey the materials the artifact is made from in all my illustration work. This is not strictly what professors of archaeology want to see and stress but I feel it gives more information to the viewer.
