A Stand of Trees (Deer Lake Trail) No.1

I grew up near Deer Lake and Burnaby Lake but I usually, more often, found myself playing in the large forest that was just across the street from where I lived. I would disappear for hours into this wetland forest.
In November 2019, I walked around Deer Lake looking for scenes I could paint for my upcoming solo art show. A group of Alder Trees caught my eye in the setting sun. It was the golden hour when the sun was just above the horizon. There was a light mist rising from the wetlands but was the perfect scene and moment I was looking for.
With this painting, I wanted to capture the dampness of the surrounding ground, the brittleness of the dry Salmonberry bush branches, and the textures of the tree bark covered by lichen, moss, and algae, all common sights in the forests I grew up with as a child.
