Medieval Stained Glass No.2. This was part of a 6-piece commission. I was asked to create six chapter intro paintings depicting medieval-style stained glass for a book publisher. The art was to be rendered in grayscale rather than full colour. I decided to render my art using washed-out sepia, rather than in full colour, so I'd have more control with the final tonal values. The artwork was well received, and I received phone calls shortly after from several art directors asking me, How did you make these? Few people had seen this type of artwork since the age of magazine printing between 1920 and 1960, when it was common practice to print artwork/illustrations in grayscale. It pays to pay attention in art history classes. I was given a lot of freedom to create these pieces, just as long as I kept to the original outlined notes. Although unusual, this project series was a lot of fun to create.
