Medieval Church. It's surprising that many medieval churches were made from the stone blocks taken from ancient Roman ruins -- it was far cheaper to reuse old, pre-cut, and ready-to-use stones than it was to quarry new stones. Many of these churches existed throughout Europe, found along old pilgrimage trails, tucked away in remote corners, but never really forgotten even if it is just their names that survive today on an old map or in folklore. What I find more surprising is how many medieval churches I have been asked to illustrate over the years including a church in France where a publisher I worked for was about to be married -- he wanted the illustration for his wedding invitations.
