My Sunflowers painting was created as a quick demo for my art class. I was teaching how to paint pen & ink drawings. I started with light paint washes over the ink drawing and then applied heavier paint layers intermixed with heavy black ink. I ended with a matte varnish over the final art that reacts with the black ink causing the ink to bleed slightly and turns the ink into a warm brown colour in places. The varnish protects the art but also gives the art a unique look and feel. This method comes from years of experimenting with art. The artwork was rendered onto Spray Board, which is spray-glued watercolour paper bonded onto matting board. The paper and the matting board are both spray-glued and then bonded together before painting. The bond is incredibly strong and long lasting and prevents the paper from buckling when painting. The pen & ink drawing can be rendered onto the paper before bonding.
