Eric Hotz: PAINTING Classes AT LANGLEY ARTS COUNCIL
My 4th painting class was an important class. I focused on, How to get a drawing from a photograph onto the canvas prior to painting. There are many methods to achieve this, but few are simple, quick, and give the artist a detailed, accurate rendering of the intended painting.
In this class, the target was to use a canvas no larger than 12x16-inches and a photograph of a landscape scene, and then draw it onto the canvas with as much detail as you want in under 30-minutes. It is a reliable, fast method. |
The resulting drawing is 100% accurate with PROPER PERSPECTIVE of the barn and the objects in the photo (trees, shrubs, sky, etc.) are accurately placed onto the canvas. You can then paint over the drawing. For my students, this was a revelation and uses easy to obtain, inexpensive equipment and supplies.

Everyone spaced themselves around the room. Comfort is always essential if you want to paint.
Unlike all other classes, this three hour class seemed like an hour. Everyone focused on their artwork.

Everyone focusing on their paintings.
One student prefered a freehand approach to rendering their painting. That is good! Everyone
has their own approach to creating. The important part is that you paint!

I was happy to see my students leave their usual art styles to try something new. This allows for artistic growth.
The painting itself was not an easy subject but it did allow for experimenting with different styles. The base
drawing creation really helped and I could see everyone realized the potential it held for future art.

The time went by quickly. Everyone focused on their art. For many, this is the time set aside to paint in the week.
Some base drawings held basic details while others added more detail. In all cases, the sky was painted first.
We used photo reference with this class but students are allowed to forgo this and paint from memory, or
create their own paintings. It is the student who decide.

You do not need a lot of equipment and supplies to paint. You just need time.
Painting big and bold. Fearless approaches to painting often bring great successes.
The final paintings. The exercise was to create a pre-drawing onto canvas that gives the artist the correct
positioning of objects (trees, foreground shrubs, etc) and the correct building and roof perspective. This
allows the artist to focus on colour and colour values, as well as on their brush strokes. This is important
when rendering architectural paintings. (This class was 3-hours long)
