Class No. 3

MAR 19, 2022

Eric Hotz: PAINTING Classes AT LANGLEY ARTS COUNCIL

With this class, the subject was to paint a living subject using acrylic paints. The subject was Spring Tulips.  Each student received a small bunch of tulips, a vase, and a black, 11x14-inch, canvas board to paint. This is a different experience from painting 2D subjects (photos).  I was surprised to see each student tackle the painting subject with great bravado.  This painting teaches how to mix colours and to blend colours on the canvas from a real, 3D subject but also allows the student to match the colour values from a real object. This painting exercise was stress free, with plenty of time to paint (3-hours) and to make corrections on the fly.  Teaching how to paint clear glass, the vase, was a challenge that no one backed down from and is good for any artist to attempt.

The focus of this class was tulips and glass vases filled with water. Everyone chose their flowers and vases.

The target painting. This was more of an example of what can be created as each student was
encouraged to create their own vision in their own style.

Everyone jumped to the challenge of painting the Spring flowers!
It is a reminder of the warmer months to come.

Picture
Painting onto a black canvas is different, and bit challenging, from painting onto white canvases.

Picture
Each student tackled their painting with their own vision and style, which is always a nice to see.

Picture
Working on their paintings. Often it is just nice to have beautiful flowers surround us while we work on art.

Picture
The vase, being clear glass, can appear to be a difficult subject  to paint but a big part of this exercise is to
realize that painting clear glass is really a study of rendering with a  minimal amount of paint. Where the
glass is clear is where there is little to no paint.

Picture
The beauty of a simple subject can never be underestimated. As a painting subject, the resulting
paintings, in both style and design, that can yield highly creative results.

Picture
Everyone was focused on their art throughout the 3-hour class.

Picture
Focusing of composition, lighting, and the natural feel of the subject, will often bring about success.

Picture
Capturing the free flow of the flower's leaves, making your composition and subject appear natural,
always creates a successful painting.

Picture
Everyone was absorbed into their art. It was a relaxing atmosphere and the time went by quickly.

Picture
The final paintings. The exercise was to create a natural looking and feeling painting, with a splash of colour
and flare and to also capture the texture and feel of a clear glass vase filled with water. Everyone
succeeded. The feel of Spring has been realized.
