Class No. 2

MAR 5, 2022

Eric Hotz: PAINTING Classes AT LANGLEY ARTS COUNCIL

With this class, I taught a different tropical landscape acrylic painting focusing on warm, layers of yellows and reds, that gives a natural feel of light. My students had a few previous painting classes and did not shy away from painting creative, free flowing colourful skies.  This painting teaches how to mix colours and to blend colours on the canvas. This painting exercise was stress free, allowing for experience of creating fluid sunset sky with the colours being reflected into the foreground water. This was meant to be a fun, creative, exercise. Samples of the class' progress and final paintings can be viewed in the photos below.

We started with painting in the sky.  I always find painting skys to be the most enjoyable part of a painting.

Picture
Painting big and bold comes with challenges but also has its rewards.

Picture
The sky can often be the most challenging part of such paintings but everyone jumped in with little fear.

Picture
The sky is what makes this painting interesting. Everyone was up to the challenge.

Picture
The colour of this painting was a relief from the cold wet winter we have been experiencing.
It felt as if the days of March are a start of a good year with warm places to visit and to enjoy.

Picture
Working away on their paintings. Sometimes the classroom becomes quite quiet as everyone concentrates.

Picture
Many people find trees difficult to paint but for some reason, my students found painting palm trees to be a
lot easier to paint than the usual British Columbia style trees.

Working on a colourful sky often means you must incorporate those colours into the rest of the painting,
which will include any foreground water.

Picture
The final paintings. One student left  early so their painting is not represented here.
I like the final results because the palm trees look natural, which is not easy to achieve.
Everyone did a really good job on their paintings. Their skies are impressive and feel warm and inviting.
