ERIC HOTZ: PAINTING CLASSES AT LANGLEY ARTS COUNCIL
With my first class of 2022, I taught my students acrylic painting techniques. All of my students are returning students so I know they have most of the basics understandings of painting with acrylics. We worked on basic painting techniques. The painting chosen was a colourful, tropical painting, where my students could shed off the winter blues and focus upon a warm, and inviting Spring, which is just around the corner. My painting classes are 3-hours long with the paintings designed to take around 2 to 2-and-a-half hours. These are designed to be leisurely classes. Samples of the class in action and their final art can be viewed in the photos below.
This class, being the first of 2022, focused on getting everyone back on board with a few painting techniques, and a splash of colour. This was meant to be an ice breaker after a colder than usual cold and wet Winter. This is all in hope of a warm Spring, free of COVID. |
Everyone has their favorite place to sit and to create!
Each student creates their own interpretation of the assignment. You will learn a lot from how everyone paints.
Even I can learn from how my students paint.

Social distancing is important in my classes. Everyone must be safe and feel safe.
Working from the target artwork is often done via a photo image. I provide each student
with a colour photo of the days assignment but the phone image can be enlarged to show more detail.

The best part of this assignment are the deep colours of an exotic location. We have all been craving a vacation
over the last two years due to COVID. This is a reminder of what is out there.

My students deeply absorbed into their paintings. The class room often goes quiet as everyone concentrates.
My students working away on the background portion of their paintings. The colour is what attracted me to
presenting this painting for my class. A splash of colour and hope for what 2022 can offer after a cold Winter.

Painting big, bold and fast often makes for impressive paintings. Bravery has its rewards!
Putting the finishing touches to a colourful painting. Very nice palm tree that feels natural in the tropical breeze sunset. Everyone did well on their palm trees.

The aim was to create a colourful rendering with a relaxed, natural feel, and this painting certainly succeeds.
The finished paintings await their critique. One student left early so their artwork is not shown here. I am impressed
with everyone's paintings. I can see improvements from my students from 2021, which always nice to see.
