I grew up with my eyes always looking toward nature. My childhood house was located across the street from a large mixed forest, which still exists today virtually untouched by modern development. I would often wander through this forest on my own. There I would find, in various places hidden from easy view, the ancient remnants of the long-forgotten Piper sawmill/logging operation that once flourished on the north side of Burnaby Lake around 1905. This forest was a place where I could disappear for hours exploring and observing the many animal and insect inhabitants of this wooded realm. Mixed into this forest, in large patches, were Labrador Tea, with their wonderful fragrance and white-pink flowers that always remind me of my childhood. Various butterfly species, along with many dragonflies, were always here to be observed dancing in the afternoon air among the openings between the clusters of coniferous trees during the long, hot summer months.
I run painting workshops where I teach the techniques required to paint accurate and realistic butterfly painting on smooth river stones. My classes are typically a single 4 hour in length taught in a classroom setting. I provide the river stones, paint, brushes, and all other supplies needed. My workshops are relaxed classes with plenty of time and instruction for each attendee to complete up to 2 butterfly paintings onto river stones
