ERIC HOTZ: ART CLASSES AT LANGLEY ARTS COUNCIL
My fourth painting class was the first of three classes where I began teaching the basics of acrylic painting. I created an acrylic painting the night before and then I ran a demo of how to re-create this painting within my 2-hour class. The painting teaches how to use colour values to make some objects appear distant while making other objects appear closer to the viewer, and also teaches how to create the illusion of light sources casting light onto objects. In this case the fireflies or orbs serve as light sources, shining light onto tree branches, trunks, and foliage. Through the use of a dry brush technique, students also learn how to imply the texture to the tree trunks and branches. This exercise was designed to give my students experience and confidence with acrylic painting while having fun with the painting process.

I created a 16x20-inch painting for my class that my students can render within the 2-hour class.

I taught this painting using a step-by-step method. Students could take their painting in any direction.
Every student renders their painting slightly different from everyone else.
Easels were provided or students could bring their own.
Students brought their own paints and brushes, although I provide some brushes and paints.
Social distancing hasn't dampened the enthusiasm nor the creativity.
Creating using acrylic paints can be both fun and rewarding for everyone.
Guidance is given and questions are answered at all times in my classes.
Learning to use colour values to convey distance and atmospheric conditions for the viewer to enjoy.
