The Hayward Lake Trail was constructed in the early 1940s when the Hayward Lake Damn was built. The original rail line ran along a creek before the valley was flooded by the construction of Hayward Lake Damn. The original rail line is now at the bottom of Hayward Lake.
This trail edges are overgrown with natural wild plants, trees, grasses, etc., while the trail is well maintained except for the areas that have been covered by landslides due to unstable earth embankments along two small sections.
This is a nice trail to hike but is remote. Bring water and watch for bears. Cell phone coverage may not be available along many sections. You can be alone along this trail but the scenery is made for artists and naturalists.
